CUTTING INTERNATIONAL AID THREATENS CHILDREN’S FUTURES

This week, the UK government followed suit from the US and announced a cut to its international aid budget. We believe this decision is short-sighted and will put millions of lives at risk.

We’ve seen firsthand how international aid transforms lives, including through AfriKids’ work with communities in northern Ghana driving lasting change for children. Government aid has funded some of our most critical work bridging the gap between Ghanaian education policy and the reality faced by thousands of vulnerable children in the most marginalised communities. Because of this support, thousands of children at risk of dropping out of school were able to secure an education, equipping them to lead healthier, more productive lives and help break the cycle of poverty.

Overseas aid costs UK earners less than £1 a week, and it’s a smart investment—ethically and economically. Investing in international development strengthens global ties, enhances security, reduces forced migration, boosts productivity, and helps break the poverty cycle; all of which help to reduce long-term dependency. Cuts to international aid threaten to undo progress in education, healthcare, and livelihoods, putting the futures of children at risk.

Our work is centred on building resilient communities, equipping them to tackle global challenges and create lasting change. Community development is the key to a more sustainable future where all children learn and thrive. Continued support is crucial in breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering communities to build a brighter, self-sufficient future.

We urge decision-makers to prioritise funding that protects and uplifts marginalised communities.

Would you consider making a regular gift to support communities in northern Ghana to rise up and take action? We couldn’t do this without you. Stand with us in making this happen!

AfriKids has also partnered with other international charities to urge the government to reverse its decision to cut the UK aid budget, risking the closure of programs supporting marginalised communities facing poverty, conflict and climate change. You can read our joint statement here.
